Title: Not Gone, Merely Marching Far Away
Author: speedy
Fandom(s): Star Wars
Genre: Gen
Pairing/Characters: Cobb Vanth, Din Djarin
Rating: G
Summary: The helmet and the voice gave no details about the man’s age, but it made Cobb feel every one of his fifty-two years. He remembered a time most of the galaxy knew about the Jedi, even if it was just from exaggerated stories.
Notes: Realized Cobb is about the same age as Anakin (and Greedo and Grogu) and was a slave on Tatooine too. I expanded out the little bit I put on tumblr. It's just a short snippet set during Chapter 9, when Cobb and Din are driving through the desert, before they run into the Tuskens.

Cobb Vanth was curious about the Mando he’d convinced to help with the krayt. He must’ve been looking for a Mandalorian for a reason. “So, what’s your story, Mando?”

The helmet glanced back to the saddle bag where the little guy was riding. “I’ve been quested to bring the Child back to its kind. If I can locate another of my kind, I can chart a path through the network of coverts. Find someone who has some information to help my search.”

“Tall order. Do you know what species the kid is? What planet they might’ve come from?”

Mando shook his head. “I’m told he’s a Jedi.”

“That was some sort of religious order, not a species.”

Mando turned his helmet to look at Cobb. “You’ve heard of them?”

The helmet and the voice gave no details about the man’s age, but it made Cobb feel every one of his fifty-two years. He remembered a time most of the galaxy knew about the Jedi, even if it was just from exaggerated stories. “You must be really young not to remember the Jedi. They led the Republic’s army during the Clone Wars.”

“Do you know where I can find them now?”

His eyes were drawn to the engine of his speeder bike. Just a lucky find on the old circuit, an odd coincidence. “Dead, nearly to the last,” he said sadly. “Palpatine claimed they staged a coup against him and had them all executed by the clones. Between you and me, if the Jedi did try to overthrow him, they had the right of it. Bastard made himself Emperor before the bodies were even cold. It’s been thirty years. I’m sure there might be a few survivors running around the galaxy, but you’re going to have a hard time finding them at this point.”

Mando didn’t respond. With the helmet, Cobb couldn’t guess what was going on in his head. The Empire hadn’t hidden what had happened to Mandalore. Probably wasn’t nice to hear he and the kid were likely in the same situation.

“You knew one.”

Mando was quick, Cobb would give him that. “Two,” he admitted. “I used to get into scuffles with one all the time when I was a kid. Ani had a fast mouth and faster fists. Temper hotter than the suns at noon in the Dune Sea. Did not know how to go slow. But he’d give you the shirt off his back if you needed it, fix anything that needed fixin’. Won his freedom in a pod race when we were ten. Took off to the Core to be a Jedi and I didn’t hear anything about him until he ended up a poster boy for the Clone Wars. Called him ‘The Hero With No Fear’ in the propaganda. That’s a laugh. Ani was the most scared kid I knew, until his temper got the better of him and the red mist dropped. He died with the rest of the Jedi when the Empire rose. I worked a job with his teacher for a while, butchering a sand whale out in the Dune Sea, right after I was freed. He was hiding out in the Wastes, but I haven’t seen Kenobi in about ten years or so, think he’s dead now too.”

“Nu kyr'adyc, shi taab'echaaj'la.”

“What’s that mean?”

“Not gone, merely marching far away.”

“I like that.”

“Kenobi got a first name?”

“Obi-Wan. Everyone here called him Ben. Nice guy, quiet, kept to himself mostly. I think Ani’s death broke him. I got the impression they were real close.”

“I’ll see what I can find out.”

“I wish you luck. You’re going to need it.”

Cobb let the conversation drop. They were approaching the canyon- Sand people territory. Best to stay alert- and not distracted by old memories- in these parts.
